Ever wondered how to turn the biography of an extraordinary life into a character-driven, authentic, and unforgettable film? This masterclass is designed for filmmakers, directors, and creative professionals who want to learn about directing a biopic. Focused on the challenges and nuances of adapting real-life stories for the screen, participants will gain insight into the research, creative decisions, and technical execution required to bring true stories to life.

Facilitated by Jean-Claude Barny

Jean-Claude Barny, French filmmaker of Guadeloupean and Trinidadian descent, brings a unique style that fuses the sensibilities of European auteur cinema with the vibrancy of American entertainment. He made his directorial debut in 1994 with Putain de Porte, starring Vincent Cassel and Mathieu Kassovitz, and went on to contribute to the casting of La Haine. In 2003, Barny returned to Guadeloupe to direct his first feature film, Nèg Maron (2005), and later helmed the popular mini-series Deadly Tropics. His second feature, Gang of the Caribbean (2016), was inspired by Loïc Lery’s autobiography. Following his work on Fanon, Barny is currently developing his next project, Siki.
